Tata Nexon Overview;

Given that Tata Motors was the one to realise ‘sub-four-metre car’ need not always mean hatchback (remember the Indigo CS compact sedan), it has taken its own sweet time to come up with a compact SUV. Sure, the carmaker had made its intent about breaking into the segment very clear with the Nexon concept of 2014, but it’s only in September 2017 that the final product will be available at a showroom near you. One look at the Nexon, though, and you’ll probably agree Tata Motors has used its time well to come up with a genuinely eye-catching rival to the likes of the Ford EcoSport and huge-selling Maruti Vitara Brezza. The Nexon is an attention magnet. Its overall design and styling are so radically different from what we’ve seen from Tata Motors, even over the past two years, that the badges are the only big giveaways of its company of manufacture. Tata Nexon Design & Style

Smashing! The Tata Nexon is one car that has stayed true to its concept roots. Everything including the stance and overall design language can be related to the concept. In fact, a few people in and around Kochi asked us if this is a prototype car that we’re driving around. The Impact Design, as Tata likes to call it, has been working quite well with all of its recent launches like the Tiago, Tigor and Hexa. The black honeycomb grille is a nice element with a chrome outline to it, flanked by the tear drop projector headlamps. These lights have a LED strip that doubles up as a DRL. Unlike the Brezza’s units, these cannot be switched off. The air intake too is large and above it, pushed to the sides are eyebrow-shaped enclosures that house the fog lamps. The lower part of this nacelle is a white ceramic sash which does its job quite well in bringing your attention to the car.

Moving on to the side, the coupe-like roofline looks really cool. The ceramic sash used for the fog lamps too has been used here for the rising belt line. The wheel arches aren’t unusually flared but house 16-inch wheels as standard. Tata Motors’ designers have used a bluish grey colour for the Elite i20-like floating roof. At the rear, the pinched lines create a harmonious effect to portray what will be one of the most attractive derrieres on any Indian car. The lower part of the bumper has a black diffuser, which is also shared with the Tiago and its derivatives.If only looks could sell, the Nexon will be a top seller. However, the Nexon doesn’t look like a true-blue SUV and instead feels like a hatchback on stilts. Remember the Vista D90 Xtreme concept?

Tata Nexon Cabin & Space

The interior is filled with new techie stuff and the focus on quality and refinement is quite apparent. The highlight is what Tata calls the Grand Centre Console, which really pushes the boundaries of what we expect of a car in this segment. From the neatly tucked in handbrake lever to the sliding tambour door mechanism, everything looks and feels a few classes above.Then, there’s the first in segment Multi Drive Modes selector dial that lets you choose between Eco, City and Sport settings. The theme colour of the infotainment screen changes to match the driving mode you are on. Don’t get your hopes too high though – it doesn’t have any off road setting because the Nexon is a front wheel drive car.

Unlike the exterior, the dashboard follows a simple and straightforward design. You get a floating 6.5-inch touchscreen that supports Android Auto. Tata says Apple Car play will be introduced soon. Infotainment system comes with the ability to read out text and Whatsapp messages and send replies using voice commands. The HD display offers intuitive interface and responds quickly. You can access all functions with minimal ‘eyes off the road time’. Nexon also offers a lot of niceties including the superbly sounding Harman music system, automatic climate control, navigation through the connected smartphone, voice commands for most functions, reverse camera and most importantly, a wearable smartkey. However, the steering wheel and the instrument panel have been carried over from the Tiago and Tigor.

There are 31 smart storage areas including a huge glovebox, bottle holders and even umbrella holders on the doors to make the cabin very practical.The front seats are well padded for great comfort and support. Height adjustable driver seat and tiltable steering ensure finding a suitable driving position is not an issue. You would appreciate the elevated driving position and the excellent visibility in all directions. However, rear visibility is slightly compromised thanks to the small rear windscreen.There’s adequate legroom for rear passengers and despite the sloping roof, head room is generous too. Yet, the rear bench is not wide enough for three passengers. Centre armrests with cupholders and rear air vents make things more comfortable at the back.350 litres of boot space can be expanded to 690 litres by folding the rear seat on a 60:40 ratio.

Tata Nexon Engine & Transmission

The Tata Nexon comes both in petrol and diesel. It has a 1.2-litre turbo petrol that delivers about 108bhp of power and 180Nm of maximum torque. The Tata Tiago also uses the same engine, but it gets a turbocharger in the Nexon, for better performance. The power output is also higher. It comes mated to a 6speed manual transmission. This is something unique in this segment for a petrol vehicle.

The other engine is a 1.5-litre diesel engine that churns out about 108bhp of power and it comes with best-in-class torque of 260Nm. The diesel engine is the most powerful one in the segment and this also comes with a 6speed manual transmission. This engine is a four-cylinder one, unlike the three-cylinder one found on the Tiago. Both engines get multiple driving modes which are Eco, City and Sport. The Nexon is a front-wheel drive SUV and it does not have an AWD system.The Nexon delivers good fuel efficiency. As the petrol is similar to the Tata Tiago, it should return close to 13km/l in the city and about 17km/l on the highway. At the same time, the diesel engine will return about 17km/l in the city and 20km/l on the highway at least.

Tata Nexon Driving Dynamics

The Tata Nexon comes with a dual path suspension and we must mention that it has been tuned very nicely. The suspension attacks potholes and bad roads with ease, without causing discomfort to passengers. The car remains pretty much stable even while going on broken patches at slightly higher speeds. The 16-inch tyres also have good grip levels. The steering is light at low speeds and weighs up nicely on the highways. It has decent feedback on offer and is pretty direct. Body roll isn’t much and I actually found the Nexon to be fun to drive. Braking power is good and ABS is standard across all variants.

Tata Nexon Safety Features

Tata Motors is offering dual front airbags and ABS with EBD on all variants. You also get a seat belt height adjuster standard on the Nexon. We all are pretty much familiar with the sales and service of the automaker. Sales outlets across the country are aplenty and service centres are also in abundance. While service quality levels may not be the best, Tata isn’t that bad either and the company is working their way up.

Tata Nexon Verdict

The Nexon is a remarkable product from Tata; a bold crossover that combines standout form while packaging in immense practicality too, and if it weren’t for the the fit and finish issues, we would recommend it without hesitation. Especially the diesel. No kidding, the Nexon is likely to set segment benchmark on account of its very easy to drive diesel engine, and the big car levels of space in the cabin. On top of that, the Nexon is a neat and tidy handler and comfortable to be chauffeured around in too. The petrol is exciting when driven hard – but for everyday use you’d wish it offered smooth and more fluid performance. And, yes, the design is striking, and this Tata has all the features you need.
