The hymen is a thick membranous layer of tissue which encircles the inside of the vaginal entrance and allows the escape of menstrual blood. While some hymens are so elastic that they do not tear even during intercourse, we know that for most women the hymen is usually torn at the lower part during first intercourse, after tampon insertion, or through some exercises.
Hymen repair is often performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, but can also be performed under general anaesthetic if a patient prefers. This surgery is minimally invasive and is a day case procedure. The hymen has a secondary layer that can be sown up to cover the torn skin. As it grafts together once more, the hymen will appear intact. If for any reason this is not possible then a new hymen can be created from the lip of the vagina.
Although many women are too embarrassed to raise the issue with a surgeon, the good news is that an effective, straightforward solution exists to correct this condition and can be treated discreetly.
Are there any risks associated with Hymen Repair?
Hymenoplasty is a relatively safe procedure that tends to carry few risks and side effects. However any operation carries a small risk of infection and prolonged bleeding, as well as those associated with anaesthetic.
Any complication from the hymen repair surgery itself is very rare. Occasionally there is a resulting problem of hymen tightness or hymen over-correction. This is where the opening becomes narrowed, meaning that the next act of intercourse will be difficult. However this rarely causes problems in the long-term
How soon after the operation can i have sexual intercourse?
We’d recommend at least 30 days between the operation and having sexual intercourse for the first time again.
How long does a hymen repair take?
The procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes.
Preparing for Hymen Repair
Many women find discussing the nature of this surgery to be difficult. At the Plastic Surgery Clinic we are aware of the sensitive nature of your concerns. This is why we treat all of our hymen repair patients with kindness, consideration and dignity. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with plastic surgery provider Dr. Lista or Dr. Ahmad.
We are also happy to ensure that a female nurse is present for you during your consultation if you wish. You will receive complete instructions on preparing for your surgery, and you will require a gynecological examination.
Recovery Following Hymen Repair
Following your plastic surgery procedure you will need to gently wash the area with soap and water regularly. There will be slight swelling and bruising for 2-4 weeks, but pain should be very minimal and should be gone within a week of surgery. You will receive a prescription for pain medication and antibiotics to assist with any pain and to prevent infection.
You should refrain from any vaginal insertion until the wedding night, including tampons. This will allow the incisions to heal completely and prevent the new hymen from breaking. You should also avoid heavy lifting and any strenuous activities as this may negatively affect your healing. The sutures will dissolve and come out on their own.
You should be able to return to work the day after undergoing hymen repair. You should be able to resume a light exercise routine one week after surgery. Avoid heavy lifting or a strenuous exercise routine for 4-6 weeks.
Hymen Repair Risks & Complications
Every operation has risks and potential complications. Fortunately, the vast majority of our Toronto and Mississauga hymenoplasty patients have no problems with their surgery and are extremely happy with their results.
Risks are rare but when they do occur additional medications or even surgery may be required. Such risks include infection, bleeding, scarring, pain with intercourse, and deformity. Also, the amount of bleeding upon first intercourse following surgery cannot be predicted. However, most patients never experience these risks, as they are quite rare.
Please keep in mind that at The Plastic Surgery Clinic, we will fix any problem or treat any complication for free. If you have an unsatisfactory result and we think additional surgery will help solve the issue, we will perform the surgery for free.
